Open GIS Beta

Palo Alto's Geospatial Information System (GIS) contains hundreds of layers and millions of features. The data is stored natively in California State Plane Coordinate System, Zone 3, NAD83, with with the ArcGIS Online data stored in WGS84. Some of those layers are provided for public use via ArcGIS Online Feature Services. They are listed below.

Use of and access to the Open GIS data provided is governed by the City’s Open Data Terms and Conditions of Use.

Location Data

Location data consists of point, line, and polygon features. Each feature indicates a distinct, named location in Palo Alto that can be referenced by other GIS features and systems. Using references to this base set of locations keeps spatial data more consistent and cross-referenceable.

Street Address Data

The City of Palo Alto primary address points.

Road Centerline Data

Road centerlines are line features. Each one is a segment of a roadway, typically spanning from intersection to intersection. The attibutes for each feature are specific to that road segment, such as length (in feet) and address range.

Land Use Data

Land use features are polygons covering areas of use like 'Single Family Res' and 'Public Park'. Click on a colored polygon to see its land use type in the Designation attribute. (Other polygons of the same color have the same land use.)

Tree Data

Trees are point features, each representing one city-owned tree. These trees are located in public spaces like parks and street-side planting strips (not on private property). Palo Alto's Public Works department maintains the inventory of these 40,000+ trees!

When tree markers appear evenly spaced in rows on the map, it is typically because those trees have been automatically geo-located by the GIS but not yet manually adjusted into position.

Public Project Data

Public projects are point and line features. Each one is a past, current, or future paving or utility project.

With so many overlapping features, this dataset would be a good candidate for a Fusion Tables view with filters on some of the attributes. Give it a try: Click on the green text above (to bring up the Google Fusion Tables web app), click on the Map of KML tab to display the big map, then click on the filter button on the left to start applying filters.

Trench Plate Data

Trench plates are point features, each representing a covered hole in a Palo Alto street. Click on a trench plate feature to get detailed information.

Trail Data

Trails are line features representing hiking, biking, and emergency vehicle paths that are throughout Palo Alto and within the Palo Alto Parks.

Pavement Section Data

Pavement section data is a line feature containing information on Palo Alto Street paving condition and maintenance history.

Zone District Data

Zone District data is a polygon feature of the general zoning areas in Palo Alto. The individual parcel would need to be referenced to acquire specific zoning information.

Building Roof Outline Data

Building roof outlines are polygon features containing the outlines of building roofs in and near Palo Alto.

Park Locations

Park locations are point features showing City of Palo Alto Parks within the City

Road Edges

Road edges are line features representing edge of pavement, lip of curb, face of curb and back of curb within Palo Alto.

Rooftop Solar Technical Potential Data

Rooftop solar technical potential is a measure of whether a building rooftop has appropriate topography and receives enough sunlight for it to be suitable for hosting a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The map contains two values for measuring potential: 1) the solar suitable area (attribute name: “Solar Area”), which is the total area in square meters across the rooftop that is determined to be suitable for solar, and 2) capacity (attribute name: “Solar Capacity”), which is the kilowatt (kW) direct current (DC) nameplate capacity that would result if all of the solar suitable area were covered with solar panels. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Locations
AED location data is made available for anyone to locate a device in case of a cardiac emergency.
